SENIOR LIVING OPTIONS

There are many community types and options to choose from depending on you or your loved one's needs.  Therefore, it is critical to understand the different services and levels of care each type of community can accommodate so you are able to make an informed decision.

We work with nearly all of the senior living communities and services in the area and can help you understand the differences between them.  Our clients feel well-educated on the options available to them when they ultimately make their care decision and we look forward to providing that peace of mind to you as well.

Here is a brief description and general cost of care for each type of community or service:

Assisted Living:  Assisted living communities are designed to help individuals with activities of daily living.  Assisted living communities vary in both size and level of care provided.  They provide amenities like restaurant-style dining with two or three meals daily, transportation assistance, an activity schedule, visiting medical professionals, and a focus on the social aspects of life.  The standard care usually includes medication supervision, laundry, housekeeping, meal preparation, and assistance with personal hygiene.  The price for this type of community commonly ranges from $2000 to $5000 for private apartments.

Personal Care Home: A personal care home is typically in a private residence that is usually licensed by the state.  They are similar to assisted living communities in the care that is provided and their licensure, but in a homelike setting.  This type of setting is unique in that it may provide a feeling of extended family.  These communities’ rates typically range from $1500 to $3500 for both single and shared accommodations.

Alzheimer’s/Dementia: Alzheimer’s/dementia communities are designed specifically to care for residents who suffer from these diseases.  This type of community can either be stand-alone or part of an assisted living community. In these communities, special consideration and accommodations are provided to accommodate these residents. This type of community is typically higher in cost, but usually has all-inclusive rates. The cost for Alzheimer’s/dementia communities ranges from $3500 to $5000 for both shared and private accommodations.

Independent Living: Independent living communities are typically apartment-style living with on-site healthcare professionals.  These residents are more independent and typically need very little assistance with activities of daily living. In independent living communities, you may find swimming pools, covered parking, and 24-hour emergency response services. Some provide ala carte services such as medication supervision, laundry, meals, and limited assistance with activities of daily living.  The rates for these communities usually range from $500 to $3500 per month for private apartments.

Home Care Services:  Home care services help a person to live as independently as possible at home or in a senior community.  They focus on daily life assistance including personal hygiene, medication reminders, meal preparation and eating, housekeeping, and accompanying the person to doctor’s appointments.  The cost for this service depends on the level of assistance and number of hours needed.  The typical cost ranges from $14 to $35 per hour.
