FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How do I know when it's time to look into assisted or independent living?

Ans: When you or your loved ones find that you need more assistance at home with daily activities, or if you just want to be prepared for the future, it may be time to explore a community living situation.

ยท     How do assisted and independent living communities differ from nursing homes?

Ans: The primary difference lies in the level of care provided.  In a nursing home, you are able to receive total assistance with all activities of daily living.  In contrast, independent or assisted living communities allow you to receive assistance with some activities, but not all.

  • Am I able to stay in an assisted living community if my medical needs change?

Ans: It varies on the level of care and license type an assisted living community holds.

  • Are there supplemental programs available from the government (VA, Medicaid) for people with limited income?

Ans: Yes. Medicaid and VA offer some assistance depending on the state.  Under both of these programs, financial and medical guidelines apply. Even if you meet the guidelines, that does not automatically qualify you. Applications are required for each program and the providing agency will make the decision based upon their qualification parameters.

  • I am not a senior - is assisted or independent living still available for me?

Ans: Yes.  There are communities available that do not have age restrictions.  If you have a medical need that requires assistance, there may be a community available that meets your needs.

  • Are there assisted living communities available for people with Alzheimers or dementia?

Ans: Yes.  There are communities available that specifically provide care for Alzheimers or dementia.  Some states require the community to hold specialized training and require a specific license for this level of care.

  • Will my long-term care insurance help pay for assisted or independent living?

Ans: Long-term care insurance policies can vary significantly.  Some will help pay for assisted living. You will need to call your insurance provider and ask them for the specifics.
